Bhaj Govindam - Adi Shankaracharya

This series of discourses on Bhaj Govindam of Adi Shankaracharya were given by
Osho in Shree Rajneesh Ashram, Pune, India in 1975.

Adi Shankaracharya, also known as Shankara, was born in the 8th Century in the
southern state of Kerala, India. He was a prominent Indian philosopher and
theologian who consolidated the already existing school of thought of the non-
dualistic philosophy of Advaita Vedanta, that supports the vision of oneness
rather than the illusion of dualism, plurality and differentiation. He laid down the
foundations that over the course of time have become established as the
fundamental principles of Hinduism and are the root of Indian contemporary
thought.

Osho chose to speak on this particular work of Shankara for its unique character.
In Bhaj Govindam, Shankara emphasizes devotion as well as knowledge, giving
them the same importance, not choosing one against the other. Osho says that
Shankara was an extraordinary individual who reached the peak of knowledge
and joined it with his unique devotion.

Bhaj Govindam is one of Shankara’s devotional hymns, perhaps the most well-
known and popular, as it is sung even today all across India.

The importance of Bhaj Govindam is explained by this quote of Osho:

“Amongst all the works of Shankara, no other work is more valuable than
Bhaj Govindam. Essentially, Shankara is a philosopher. But Shankara
knows that the divine cannot be attained through thinking and logical
arguments. The path that leads to the divine goes through the heart, not
through the mind”.
